10 Festival Beauty Essentials You Really Need to Pack, by Laura Whitmore

Hi, Byrdie readers! It’s just days until Glastonbury kicks off and 135,000 music lovers descend upon Worthy Farm. This is my fourth year attending, and there are a few things I've learned over the years. Pack smart, pack minimally and no matter how many times you attempt to shower, wash or wet wipe, you willneverbe clean!

Keep scrolling for the top 10 beauty products that have helped me style-out festivals over the years… no matter how muddy it gets!

1. Dry Shampoo

Last year at Glastonbury, I didn’t wash my hair for four days (don’t judge me!). By Monday morning, my hair was its own entity. What saved me (and the seven other girls in my tipi) was dry shampoo. There are so many of these products on the market, but for me, Batiste is by far the best (and the best value too). These do come in travel sizes, but if there’s a group of you, bringing one of the big cans is so worth it. The tropical version is my current favourite, as it not only makes your hair look clean… It smells bloody delicious too! Something everyone near you will appreciate.

2. Sun Protection

We pray for the sun to shine, and what do we do when it comes? Let ourselves get burnt silly! I’m really cautious with my skin, but I’ve seen some very sore bodies over the years, not to mention some crazy tan lines (one guy fell asleep/passed out with his hand covering his chest and had a full-on white handprint on his red raw skin a few hours later), so always pack sunblock. I love the Hawaiian Tropic range. My preference is the dry oil in SPF 30, as it gives your body a lovely shine too. Double score! I always try to put an SPF 50 on my face, though, as it’s extra sensitive and always exposed to sunlight.

3. Temporary Tattoos

Festivals are the one place these are acceptable. I love the gold bands for your arms, which you can get in places like Topshop and Urban outfitters. Check ouIn Your Dreamsfor some cool face ones too.

4. CC Cream

No one wants to look like they’re wearing full makeup at a festival, but it’s nice to have a bit of coverage. Juice Beauty CC cream is cruelty-free and really light on the skin. It gives a natural glow without looking like you're caked in products.

5. Hydrating Skin Spray

I keep the Murad Hydrating Toner spray in my handbag all the time, as it’s the perfect way to refresh your face during the day. You can wear it over or under makeup, and it’s designed to give you a super-hydrated complexion that boasts a silky soft texture.

6. Highlighter

I love the whole Becca makeup range. It’s an Australian cruelty-free brand, and the Shimmering Skin Perfector is the perfect highlighter for a festival (and, in fact, any occasion).

7. Eye Shadow Palette

I don’t wear a lot of eye shadow, but it’s fun to experiment at a festival, and the Gwen Stefani x Urban Decay Eye Shadow Palette is awesome. Designed by the ultimate music chick, this has Stefani’s 15 must-have shades, with an insane range of neutrals and jewel tones to mix things up for really iconic looks. If it’s good enough for Gwen, it’s good enough for me!

8. Lip Balm

Rodial’s Glam Balm Lip is the best lip balm ever! It helps to protect lips against environmental factors (such as extreme weather) and increases lip vitality too. Most importantly it leaves my lips looking glossy, volumised, hydrated and feeling protected too.

9. Glitter

Again, there are few occasions where it's acceptable to go wild with glitter. One is at festivals, the other is at Sink the Pink (my London friends will know what this is!). There are so many glitter pots around, but my absolute favourite is the MAC Pigment pot in Melon. But beware, it’s very easy to spill the whole pot (I’ve learned this from experience).

10. Face Wipes

Last but by no means least (in fact, these are the most important thing), face wipes! At festivals, face wipes become body/everything wipes since they’re the closest a lot of people come to showering. I usually take my makeup off with a cleanser and cotton pads, but in a tent, this is not practical. I recommend either Nivea or Clinique’s Take The Day Off. Bring at least two packets!
