18-year-old figure skater Gracie Gold lived up to her last name when she nabbed her first U.S. figure skating title in Boston on January 12. While she secured a place on the U.S Olympic team, her ticket to Sochi wasn’t guaranteed, given that bronze medalist Mirai Nagasu was passed over for fourth place-finisher Ashley Wanger.
The Massachusetts-born skater — who’s nearly as famous for her signature red lip as she is for her triple jumps — spoke with Everyday Health about her favorite competition look, what she does to avoid winter skin dryness, and how she keeps her hair healthy in cold conditions.
“Red is my power color — I think all women have one,” says Gold, whose favorite lipstick is CoverGirl Lip Perfection in Hot (Taylor Swift is also a fan of this shade).
While Gold relies on a bold lip hue to boost her confidence on the ice, she opts for a more low-key look when she’s not performing. “Off the ice I try to keep less on my face so my skin stays fresh and clean,” says the athlete, who counts Michelle Kwan and Mao Asada as two of her favorite skaters.
To keep her skin hydrated and protected from the chilly elements, Gold moisturizes — a lot. “I wash my face in the morning with an oil-free cleanser and then use an oil-free moisturizer,” she says. “I actually moisturize three times a day — in the morning, after I skate, and before bed.”
Icy temperatures can do a number on hair too, so Gold lathers up with Head & Shoulders’ Damage Rescue Conditioner, which contains pyrithione zinc to fight flakes and vitamin E to strengthen strands. “Bobby pins, hairspray, and cold weather cause a lot of damage to my hair, so conditioner is key to keeping it healthy,” she says.
