Between gravity, prednisone and a less active lifestyle, I have to worry about my weight. There is definitely a fat lady inside of me struggling to get out. I know this is true when I look in the mirror. I won't mention which location on my body, but she is always there, pushing, shoving and bulging away. It's not a pretty sight.
When you have muscles, joints and cartilage which are diseased, any extra weight can make it more difficult to get through the day. Just carry a 10 pound bag of potatoes from the trunk of your car, up a flight of stairs and into the kitchen. Did you feel that? I know I did. Every step is more difficult when you're hauling 10 extra pounds. Most of the time (potatoes excluded), I have more than 10 extra pounds attached to my body, to haul around. I must agree with Dr. Z that none of the fad diets work. There are a few things that do work for me, however, after years of struggling with that fat lady and trying to keep her silent.
The most important lesson I have learned about dieting is that you musteat. Starvation, fasting and going hungry doesn't work. Your body is smart enough to figure out what you are doing, and it goes into a fasting mode, slowing down your metabolism trying to protect you from starvation. That is why you have to be smarter than your body and trick it by eating. You don't have to be hungry when you are dieting. The key to eating is in what you eat.
I find it works best for me to TAKE TEMPTATION OUT OF THE HOUSE, out of the refrigerator and out of that hidden cupboard where you and only you know you have a stash of Oreo cookies. This means I have to be honest and have this conversation with myself about whether or not I am serious about this diet business. If I am serious, then I must act as my own advocate. When you are hungry, it is too easy to eat forbidden food if it is right there staring back at you from the cupboard or refrigerator.
You can find so many great diet products at the supermarket these days. A few years ago, one had to settle for celery, cottage cheese and dry hamburger patties. Then there were the protein drinks which became terribly monotonous and eventually nauseating. They could also be a problem for individuals who are lactose-intolerant. Today, the freezer section is full of dinners with fewer calories designed for dieters. Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers products are very flavorful and take the worry out of dieting. The diet dinners are not the only diet products anymore, now there is diet mayo, diet margarine, even butter supplemented with canola oil. Diet lunch meats, breads, soft drinks and seltzer water all fill the shelves. Non-fat milk or 1% milk doesn't taste that bad, especially if you get used to it gradually by mixing it with the whole milk, gradually removing the calories by adding more of the non-fat each day. There are also some delicious diet ice cream products in your freezer section such as Weight Watchers bars and the whole line of Skinny Cow products.
Artificial sweeteners such as Splenda are very flavorful. They just don't bake up quite like sugar, but they are good on fresh berries, cereal or in coffee. I especially like the new salad spritzers. You can spray a shot of this stuff on your salad without having oils floating around in the bottom of the salad bowl. Fresh produce and fresh vegetables have fewer calories, are good for you and cost less. I think the best advice is to keep it fresh and keep it simple!!! Watch the quantity!! The bottom line is: calories in and calories out! Exercise as best you can. If you can walk, walk. If you can stretch, stretch. If you can only wiggle a finger, then let us get to wiggling.
Most importantly, you have to decide whether or not you are going to let the fat lady (or gent) in you come out. Once you set your mind, the rest will follow. It's such a good feeling to have your pants fit and it will do a lot for your mental state to take charge of some area of your life. Appearance always matters, sometimes more so when we don't feel well.
