Health officials seek knitters’ help in campaign to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome
The Department of Health Seeks Knitters' Help in Campaign to Prevent Infant Deaths
Break out your knitting needles, people—they could save a life.
is looking for volunteers who love to knit and crochet to make caps for babies as part of a campaign raising awareness about the "Period of PURPLE Crying."
This is a normal, developmental stage in an infant's life, during which parents are often told their babies have "colic." It begins at about 2-weeks of age and continues until about 3-4 months of age, and all infants go through it to varying degrees. For that reason, the acronym PURPLE better serves to describe this phase, explaining specific characteristics of an infant's crying while letting parents and caregivers know that it is indeed normal and, while frustrating, it will pass.
This period is also a critical time when infants are particularly at risk for Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), which is the leading cause of death in abusive head trauma cases. An estimated 1,200 to 1,400 babies are injured or killed by shaking each year in the U.S.,
To spread awareness and prevent SBS, the department plans to distribute 4,300 purple caps to 41 hospitals across Oklahoma., reports40/29 News. Each infant born in November and December will receive a cap to remind caregivers of the importance of never shaking a baby.
Volunteers are encouraged to knit or crochet newborn caps using any shade of purple yarn that is soft and baby-friendly. They can have any variety of colors and patterns, providing they are at least 50 percent purple and free of dangling straps, strings or other choking hazards. The baby caps are accepted throughout the year, but only those received by October 1 will be included in this year's hospital distribution.
