According toThe New York Times, an estimated 25 million people in the U.S. have type 2 diabetes, and an additional 60 million people—1 in 4 adults—are considered pre-diabetic or at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And, apparently, diabetes-specific treatment is costing health insurance companies a fortune—by one cited estimate, 0 billion a year. One insurance company, UnitedHealth, hopes to reduce that number by teaming up with YMCA and Walgreens in seven cities—Cincinnati; Columbus and Dayton, Ohio; Indianapolis; Minneapolis; Phoenix and Tucson—to help people get a handle on their weight (obesity being the number-one cause of type 2 diabetes) and manage their conditions at little to no cost. According toThe New York Times, "the UnitedHealth effort is an example of the new role health insurers may take on after enactment of the federal health care law, as insurance companies are forced to cover people regardless of their medical condition.
